This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Hello, My name is Jasmine Moran and I am a first-grade dual language teacher. This year has been a great challenge; however, I can not begin to express how proud I am of my students and their continued courage to come to school every day and how happy they are. My babies come every day ready to learn and are excited about it. They are creative, thoughtful, full of questions, and always ready for a challenge. They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box to find solutions! However, this year with social distancing and not being allowed to share materials, some of the hands-on activities and centers that they would normally go to are off-limits to them. Being required to sit at their desks all day can sometimes be difficult as well. Even borrowing books from our class library is difficult. My students love to read and love math. They are learning Spanish, love speaking the language, and love learning new things.

My Project

During independent reading, my students do not have many options to pick from and can easily become bored. Many of my students have already reached above grade-level reading; with these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently. I will not be worried that they are not being challenged to continue to excel. Having more options tailored to their likes and interests will motivate them to read more. Reading lessons will become more interesting and they will have books they enjoy to actually practice the many skills that good readers have and practice.
