My Students

The memo on my whiteboard reads: "If you want to be a better reader, read. If you want to be a better writer, read."

The core of my classroom is built upon the love of books, great writer's craft, and timely world issues.

In the courses that I teach--AP Language and Composition, Junior English, and Creative Writing, my students spend a large amount of time analyzing the work of great writers to become better writers themselves. Though the reading lives of my students vary, my goal is to present them with texts that are timely, riveting, and relevant to them as young adults, so they can gain the knowledge that will allow them to engage in positive, civil discourse over imperative topics that are shaping our culture today. My students are hard-working, diligent, and kind, and who continuously rise to the occasion.

My Project

This set of texts will help diversify the current choices for my investigative journalism text sets that I have available for student book clubs. As a teacher, it is important that I help my students feel connected to the world around them, and it's through the reading of texts, writing about these texts, and discussing these texts that they grow as critical thinkers. Bringing these relevant and timely texts to the classroom will provide them with further opportunities to understand relevant and important social justice topics that coincide with the current climate of our country. Such texts are important, as they will bring students new perspectives while requiring critical thinking, questioning, reflection, and an opportunity to engage in civil discourse over important topics with their peers. For these reasons, book clubs are always a favorite unit for my students.
