My students are all tackling their English credits through a variety of lenses. I teach Core English 11, Honors English 11, Concurrent Enrollment English 1010, and Creative Writing. This means that my learners are everywhere from reluctant readers who struggle to engage with grade-level texts (and who need remedial reading instruction in many cases), to gifted students looking for a class that will stretch their capabilities and earn them college credit.
All of my students have been adversely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, with many of them holding down jobs to help support their families, caring for younger siblings and cousins, and torn between their educational and personal obligations.
Some are using one of my courses to earn credit for and English class they did not pass last year for pandemic-related reasons, and as such are in need of even more support as they are at risk of not graduating on time.
As we are situated in an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse feeder pattern, our students require diverse classroom materials in order to see themselves in the classroom.
My Project
My students read on a variety of levels, from elementary all the way through college. They come from diverse backgrounds, have diverse interests, and need a classroom library that reflects the full spectrum of their experiences, aspirations, hopes, and fears.
The texts in this project were specifically selected to meet my students' literacy goals, pushing reluctant readers into captivating stories at their reading levels, and challenging advanced readers with advanced ideas, content, and vocabulary.
Students will be able to select books from this library for warm-up sustained silent reading time, as mentor texts to use as models when we engage in narrative writing, and just to have something to read at school or at home.
