My Students

I teach Kindergarten at a diverse, Title 1 school in southwest Florida. Sixty-one percent of the students receive free or reduced-price lunch. The student population consists of numerous cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our school community works hard to ensure our students reach their potential.

My Kindergarten students love to socialize and to interact with their peers, which supports learning experiences when sharing information.

During whole group instruction, I frequently incorporate accountable talk activities in all subjects because I feel this engagement supports student learning at its best. They love to turn and talk with a partner while learning and engaging in a wide variety of activities. Their excited expressions and enthusiasm for learning with and from peers help them explore and use social skills. Students learn a lot while engaging with peers. Accountable talk reinforces listening, verbalizing and recalling skills in communication.

My Project

The carpet will give the students a place to join as a classroom community for accountable talk during sharing time with peers. I use the bee theme in my classroom since bees work together with a common goal. While on the carpet students will sit in their personal space and be able to turn and talk to a partner about various topics in our curriculum.

Working together to problem solve and communicate effectively with others are important life time skills.

In Kindergarten, opportunities to practice social skills provide a foundation for future success in life. Lots of enthusiasm occurs as my students bubble with excitement during accountable talk and problem solving activities. I love listening to and watching my students socialize with each other during activities where they actively communicate, making connections and using higher level thinking skills.
