"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." Chinese proverb. After working in an inner city school for a year I have realized the true meaning of this quote. I realize that my students' really want to learn, but face many obstacles.
I teach in Miami-Dade County.
I can say that the majority of my school is African American, and the rest of my students are from Latin America and the Caribbean. I have students from Honduras, Nicaragua, Argentina, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Bahamas, and Puerto Rico. My school is a big melting pot where different cultures come to obtain an education so that they can achieve the "American Dream". Although I really see all of my kids wanting to succeed, the conditions and resources available to them do not make success an easy task. It amazes me that students do not let this stop them. They come into school everyday seeking that knowledge that is going to push them past their current situation.
The materials I asked for are to ensure that we run an effective learning environment. In this effective learning environment students are learning at all times. Also, with these resources we will make sure to take advantage of our biggest enemy, time. I am requesting Staples copy paper since paper is a resource that is sometimes not available at my school. I feel that instead of having my students copy down word problems, equations, and charts I can make copies, so that we can make sure to take advantage of time. As the semester goes on pencils also become an issue. A lot of my students' will come to school without a pencils or special materials that we will need for the day’s lesson. To stock my classroom with basic supplies I am also requesting Crayola colored pencils and markers, poster board, binder clips, yellow pencils, bookends, file folders, stickies notes, hall passes, and a Swingline desk stapler. The three Toshiba Excite Go mini tablets will provide students access to the various on-line resources, and will be used for independent, small and whole group learning.
Every donation is going to make a huge impact on all of my students.
The requested resources will help my students become better math students in my class. This can have a life long positive effect on the students that I serve. Anything helps, no donation is too small. All that really matters is that you took it upon yourself to be an agent of change.
You donate directly to the teacher or project you care about and see where every dollar you give goes.
