Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a second year teacher, I have much to learn, one thing I learned fairly quickly is that making my students feel comfortable and safe is the first step. Regardless of what subject is on the curriculum, students need to feel welcomed by the classroom and by the instructor. I believe that creating a physical space where they can express themselves allows them to better focus on academics. I recognize that I have much to learn from them and strive to make my classroom a safe space for both them and myself. It is my opinion that when students feel seen by their educators and their peers, they can truly thrive.

I hope to make every student feel acknowledged, whether it is with a snack for engaging in class or by displaying their heritage/identity on our classroom walls.

"Piece of Me" is a project I thought about for weeks. I thought; how can I make my students feel welcomed in the classroom? It is my humble opinion that representation matters. I chose to pick flags from all of the countries that are represented in my class. Diversity is beautiful and I think it should be emphasized. It is important for students to be surrounded by positive messages and affirmations, which is why I chose the decorations I did. Additionally, rewards and acknowledgments also play a huge role in the learning process. Using candy or small gifts to encourage participation works well at first, before you know it, the entire class in engaged. Lastly, I got a couple Spanish-English dictionaries to help the students who want to quickly translate a word and posters of basic Spanish vocabulary to post around the room.
