My Students

My students every year ask me, "Do you do gymnastics or tumbling?" My answer is "I am trying", but due to cuts I can't afford mats. So I try to modify my activities. They want lessons to be taught from a different stand point of your normal skills set.

My students range from 6-8 grade, and one special needs class, I love them to death and they are very full of energy.

My school is a Title I school in a low income neighborhood, we have two yards and are also trying to start a garden with my students. Having that will be a start to new beginnings, and opening my students to new horizons. My students are also fun going and love to play.

My Project

I want to introduce the sport of gymnastics into our curriculum. Mats are used for safety in gymnastics, and in training new skills. They are usually a piece of foam (covered in leather) ranging from 1.5-28 inches thick, covered in a vinyl or plastic lining. The foam ranges in density from relatively firm to very soft. Landing mats are usually blue, but can also be almost any other color. Mats come in a range of sizes, from very small mats used. We shall use the mat conduct lessons in stance , balance, rolls, and other core exercises. Mats satisfy two prime purposes in curriculum gymnastics. First, they may be used to provide an area on which floor work may be practiced. Second, they can provide a 'target area' for controlled, feet first landings from a height, such as a nesting table. Whilst some cushioning is enabled in this latter function, the impact of landing is expected to be absorbed by the performer bending at the knees and hips and this skill should be taught.

Anyone that has ever taken a gymnastics class will tell you that discipline is a pre-requisite of gymnastics.

Without incredible self-control, a gymnast will not make it in this sport. Some people are blessed with incredible balance, and others truly have to work at it. Without gymnastics, I would have never concentrated on improving my balance. In my adult life, the balancing skills I learned on the beam and at the gym have improved my agility.
