My Students

Creative, earnest, curious, smart...these are all words I would use to describe our class. My students this year are learners who want to find out how things work and why; who have strong opinions about the world and how to make things better, and who are brave and bold in their convictions. My students this year are readers, writers, engineers, historians, scientists, and mathematicians. They arrive at school each day with a smile and a high-five, ready to shake things up.

These are the children who are going to change the world.

I find myself inspired by the inquisitive, tenacious students who I am lucky enough to call "mine" this year. Whenever I present them with an experimental art project, a new math concept, or a chance to design something to solve a problem, I know I can count on this group of kiddos for the most creative, outside-the-box approach that one could imagine. This class is ready to learn, try new things, and change the world!

My Project

The materials for this project will be used to teach my students about climate change: the facts, the questions, and how we can create positive change for future generations. This project consists of a variety of science texts, picture books, curriculum guides, and 10 hands-on engineering kits that will teach kids about designing renewable energy solutions.

My goal with this project is to educate and inspire young learners, and to empower them to affect change in the areas of climate science and renewable energy technologies.

I will use an inquiry approach to immerse my students in research-based literature, using both fiction and non-fiction texts to help them understand climate change on a deeper level. Students will work in small groups to learn about renewable energy sources and create their own emergent technologies, using the K'NEX Education Renewable Energy kits. These hands-on STEM kits allow students to design technologies that effectively harness the power of wind, water, and solar energy. They will help me teach my students about energy generation, storage, and clean energy systems within a real-world application, and will give me the tools I need to inspire these budding scientists and future leaders to create a world that is a better place for everyone.
