Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This year I am training to become a certified Reading Recovery teacher. This has been my aspiration for the past decade. I have been around Reading Recovery teachers ever since I became a teacher. I always felt that it is the ultimate teaching job, working one on one with the most struggling first graders in the entire school. As a Reading Recovery teacher, I learn to tailor instruction to each individual student that I service. I have twenty weeks to move the most struggling first graders to the point that they can function independently in the classroom. I have seen a tremendous change in my students already. I am so excited to really make a huge difference in the lives of these children. The students that I work with will directly benefit from a voice recorder, as it will help me analyze the student's thinking after the lesson. I will also use the voice recorder to help my students hear themselves as readers if they have fluency difficulties, or as a praise for reading with expression and fluently. I also constantly work with magnetic letters to show my students how letters and words work. My students will greatly benefit from having a dry erase magnetic board due to the immediate contact with magnetic letters usage when we break words apart and when we construct words that the child is puzzled about. Everyday I will use the magnetic board for about ten minutes with each child that I service. A crucial part of reading recovery is to work with mechanical pencils. The reason why we need to use mechanical pencils is due to their efficiency. No need to sharpen and they come with erasers. My students get to concentrate on the important parts of the lesson by having a pencil that is low maintenance. You will be surprised what a difference it makes. All of these supplies would really allow me to serve my students better. I see four Reading Recovery students every day for about a half-hour. During the remainder of my daily time I see third graders. My job is to prepare them for the state exams they will greatly benefit from the mechanical pencils as well. Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal.
