This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I would like all of my kindergartners to be on or above the kindergarten reading level. It is important for my students to have opportunities to work with texts that will help increase their reading levels. My biggest challenge is having enough, just right books for all of my students to learn from.

I teach kindergarten to a group of fantastic students at a Title 1 school on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

Our school is truly a barrier-free school, serving all students who come through our doors. Almost 10% of our students are English Language Learners, and 33% are students with disabilities. Almost half of our students stay in after-school until after 5 PM each day while their parents work. My students love reading and are truly getting excited about being able to utilize the strategies they have learned to read words right off the pages.

My Project

I am extremely fortunate to have just right books in my classroom for my students. These tools help me provide appropriate and engaging instruction for my students. They enable me to offer differentiated levels of support to my general education, my special education, and my English Language learners. Unfortunately, I do not have nearly enough just right books truly help my students increase their reading levels. My current just right library has very old books that are not compatible with the ever-increasing kindergarten benchmarks my students need to make every year. With brand-new and exciting leveled books, my students will be even more eager to read both privately and with their buddies during reading workshop and other reading time throughout the day. I am requesting leveled library books so that I can continue to provide appropriate, supportive instruction for my diverse group of learners.

With donations to my project, my students will have the just right library they need in order to build their reading foundation.

They will have opportunities to work with new books they haven't seen before, as well as be challenged in ways that my older books did not. Lastly, with the addition of books to my library, students will be able to take more books home and have the ability to take what they have learned in the classroom and share it with their families.
