My Students

FCAT! That is the word that 3rd graders are hearing and are fearing. Third grade is the first year that my students will take the state testing and a lot of pressure is put on them to "test" well. I want to make sure that my students can be successful as well as have fun while learning math.

I am moving grades this year from Kindergarten to 3rd grade and I will be teaching just math.

I am excited for the change and the students I will be teaching will be some of the same students that I taught in K. I can't wait to see how much they have grown, and I will have already developed a bond with most of them. We are a Title 1 school. A majority of our students are on Free or Reduced lunch and/or come from economically disadvantaged homes. However, I know these students and they are eager to learn and to explore new ways to learn math.

My Project

I am asking for math manipulatives: like Place Value kits, Fraction kits, Base 10 stamps, etc. so every student can use them right there at their seats (or in groups) to solve math problems. Students learn math by DOING math. Many students have to see it and feel it to understand it. Visual learning is exemplified when students are physically able to move manipulatives to show relationships. The materials I requested will help my students develop conceptual understanding of math ideas by representing those ideas in multiple ways. Students will be able to build mental images using these manipulatives and in turn will be accountable for their math work.

With your support and donations my class doesn't have to just rely on a workbook or a teacher to master a concept.

My students will be able to work with manipulatives to deepen their understanding of the concepts and relationships taught. I will also be able to use these materials with any remedial students who need to be retaught a concept or just need that extra way of looking at a problem. With these donations I feel my 3rd grade students will "attack" the FCAT with success and confidence.
