My Students

"Sitting still is overrated. It makes sense for the opera or for meditating, but in most classrooms and child care centers, it's given far more honor than it deserves. Children need to move." ~Tom Hunter, National Association for the Education of Young Children.

It has been a pleasure to work with my students during the past year and some for even three years!

They are an amazing group of 12 students, who truly exemplify what is means to be resilient, in their personal and school lives. I work at a school in the heart of Brownsville, Brooklyn, a community plagued by violence and poverty. Many of my families battle with struggles such as homelessness, poverty, living in foster care, etc. In addition to their personal struggles outside of school, each of my students has a learning disability and has had many failures in their short educational carriers before entering my classroom. As a team, my students and I, have worked tirelessly to build a STRONG learning community where everyone is a key member of the team, respects and encourages one another, and is seen for their strengths and not their challenges. Watching my students blossom into confident learners and role models in our school has been an honor. Our journey continues another year!

My Project

I am a firm believer that every child needs something different to learn; there is no one-size-fits-all method for learning. In my classroom students are seen as individuals. My goal is to give children a variety of choices regarding where to sit, and even a tool to sit with, to increase focus and distractibility. Sensory input plays a huge role in our ability to learn. Research has proven if our bodies are over-stimulated or understimulated we can't learn because we are too distracted. "Feeding" our sensory system can be done by allowing opportunities for movement in the classroom. Half of my students have sensory diets, physical movement plans that help regulate their sensory systems making them capable of learning and focusing. Having chairs such as the Kore Wobble will allow students to read and move at the same time, or the Bilibo gives a child a clear definition of their body in space. While other tools like think putty or the squishy balls can keep help a child focused.

Children should have the RIGHT tools needed in order to help them learn and be successful.

My students have MANY challenges that are beyond their control. Giving them the necessary tools to learn and breaking down existing barriers is vital to continued academic success. In recent studies, having different seating choices that allow for movement, and tools to deepen concentration have been directly linked to improved test scores and overall academic success. Movement and learning are key to success!
