My Students

Have you ever seen a 5 year old sit still for 5 minutes? How about a 9 year old?! It's not physically possible! All students can benefit from moving more. My autistic students love to move! Moving helps them feel comfortable in their bodies and helps them relate to their classmates and other adults.

Our students love the arts and being able to express themselves creatively.

Each class has both music and art twice a week, but they suffer due to lack of materials. While we do our best with what we have, I would love to offer the best experience I can to these students while they are in music class. Our school is a small, high achieving neighborhood school in the heart of a large urban city. The small size of our school (one of each grade - K- 8th grade and a full K-8 program for students on the Autism Spectrum) contributes to our unique family atmosphere which values fundamental regard for all children. Our learning community serves an economically and culturally diverse population of students living in the surrounding neighborhood and communities from around the city, all of whom receive free breakfast and lunch each day.

My Project

Children naturally love music! Whether it's soft and soothing or a lively tune, children feel music physically and emotionally. It particularly benefits my autistic students (K-8...ages 5 to 15). Music and movement benefit a child's development in many ways - social skills, emotional expression, increase creativity/imagination, new words/concepts, participation in a group, refinement of listening skills by noticing changes in tempo/pitch, improvement of large and fine motor skills (playing instruments), balance, coordination, rhythm (dance), explores cause and effect, awareness of others through movement and body position, enhances self-concept by sharing music and dance of other cultures. Students engage better during movement activities. By integrating new materials and props (tennis balls, bean bags, and the parachute), students have more visual ways to see abstract ideas.

In addition to all of the social and emotional benefits that participating in music affords, research shows that music increases students' language skills, their memory skills, and their ability to focus.

Movement internalizes those skills in their bodies... which not only helps them to retain the information, but to apply the same concepts while in their regular classrooms. Please help me to brighten my students day and to give them the best experience in music that I can.
