This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

What would help teenage English-language learners who need more time to practice sound and spelling pattern correspondence? An appealing and dignified storage and retrieval solution for their multi-sensory literacy routine!

After collaborating with a special-education teacher and a literacy coach during the 2023-24 school year on a process where students and teachers write on laminated paper with white-board markers and move chunks of text around to help students take an active role in speaking, writing, and processing sound-spelling correspondence at their own pace, we realized that so many more students would benefit from this type of tactile processing if we could make it easy to do.

Where do you keep all the small pieces of text and laminated blank paper? How do you signal professionalism in these routines through the types of materials used? How can we minimize the time spent taking out and cleaning up materials so that more time is spent on the language work?

Central to this process is having an inviting, easy-to-grab storage options. These Stasher bags are a perfect solution because they are the right sizes for our different needs and the right material (light, durable, appealing to touch) for students. There's nothing infantilizing about silicone, which is an important consideration for my teenage language learners taking the risks to play with language that they sometimes feel ashamed not to have learned earlier in their lives. The Stasher silicone bags fit perfectly in the movable carts I got so that getting materials is as simple as rolling them over to a table. By contributing to this part of the work, you will help me continue to implement multi-sensory literacy routines that can be done solo or collaboratively with the dignity that adolescent learners deserve.
