Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach pre-k through fifth-grade students at a low-income school. Most of my students are on government assistance and receive free breakfast and lunch. My classes have eighteen to twenty-four students who are eager to learn new things. The district gives only a small amount of money for school supplies, small instruments, and repair supplies for elementary music.
My students love to be challenged with new activities.
Many of my students have limited knowledge of the world outside their neighborhood and need more opportunities to learn, create, and grow.
My Project
Two things that my students love doing in my Music class are using scarves and egg shakers. Both allow the students to listen to music and add their own little flare.
My younger students love using egg shakers because they are relatively easy to play and are fun; all my students love using the scarves because they make a kinesthetic connection with the music which leads to a better understanding.
By moving to and playing with music, students make better connections to many different types of music that they may not listen to otherwise.
