My Project

Last week, 1200 middle school teachers in Hawaii were able to attend the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE) conference. It felt good to discuss with fellow practitioners what we've been noticing in middle schools in the post-pandemic world.

Like the other middle school teachers I met at the AMLE conference, I've been concerned about the mental health of my students.

A message I got from many teachers at the conference was how much art has helped students process how they're feeling. Enter this project!

I am asking for quality mural paints so that students can paint murals with positive quotes, and art to beautify our campus, and help students have an artistic outlet. The boards will allow the murals to be movable, and the mural paint covers well enough that a board can be used multiple times.

The paint will also be used for "graffiti benches," a pilot I'm trying in my classroom. The school has noticed an increase in student "tagging" of school property. A teacher at AMLE shared that she gives students a dedicated place to graffiti and then paints over it to start again, to reduce "tagging" in her classroom. We have painted some wooden benches to get started, and the students love them. This mural paint will help us repaint the benches each time to give students a creative outlet for their energy and emotions.
