Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As a first year teacher in an inner city school, I am finding that one of my biggest challenges is getting my students to read. When I am successful in getting them to read it is even harder to get them apply to what they have read, and get them to answer comprehension questions.

Imagine that you are a sixth grade student who reads at a first grade level. Now imagine that you are required to take a state test that tests your reading skills and asks to apply what you have read. When you look at the text all you see and read makes no sense to you. This is what my students encounter on a daily basis. Low funding and lack of materials makes it difficult for me as a teacher to really help my students master these concepts.

The good news is that there is a solution. What was one of the best parts of school? For me it was definitely playing games. What better way to strengthen test taking skills that the students need then by having fun, entertaining, and educational board games for the students to play. These board games and question cards allow students to improve their skills without even realizing they are doing it. The best part is that the students don't need me to be able to play the games. These games can be done in reading stations or even during indoor recess. The students will think of it more as fun and games then reading comprehension.

So think of that sixth grader struggling to read, and think about how they can strengthen their reading skills by playing games with a friend. With your help my students will be able to become better readers and answer these higher level thinking questions with ease.
