Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a special education teacher with 17 years of teaching experience. My school is located in the heart of Corona Queens. This has been one of the hardest hit areas by the coronavirus in the United States. Many students are coming from a low socioeconomic background. There are over 115 students who live in shelters and many more who share space with numerous other families. Most of the children are ELLs and come from hardworking immigrant families. With the pandemic happening, these hardworking families cannot even get to work and many can barely put food on the table.

My Project

Motivation is half the battle! This is especially true for many students with disabilities, ELLs and students coming from a low socioeconomic background. Now add on traumatic experiences associated with a pandemic as well as loss of learning for students who have not been in a school building in almost a year and a half and now motivation is not half the battle but is the battle.

Help me stock my class store.

Within my class, I utilize a PBIS system (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support System) that focuses on Positive Reinforcement to promote student achievement. Students receive points, compete on leader boards and are involved in class contests based on earned points for individualized student behavioral goals. Students can then exchange their points for items within the store. Thank you for your help in helping me create this year's class store!
