This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a charter school in the South Bronx. Many of our students enter the school reading significantly below grade-level, and I work with these students in small groups to help them improve their reading skills.
Many of my students feel like failures when it comes to reading.
They have had such a hard time learning to read that many have almost stopped trying. For these students, becoming a proficient reader seems like a goal that is far beyond their reach. At our school, we go above and beyond to ensure that no student gives up and that all students learn to the best of their potential. We work hard to give our students the best preparation we can for high school, college and the world beyond. For the students I teach, however, even more help is needed.
My Project
I am asking for high-interest workbooks from a recently published reading intervention program that helps struggling middle school students improve their reading skills. These workbooks are very appealing, essential to middle-school readers who need that extra "hook" to get them started, with topics ranging from outer space, to ancient Egypt, to mountain climbing. The text is accompanied by exciting photos and pictures to help learners understand the material. When I showed a sample to one of my students, she exclaimed, "I want one of those! You could assign me reading from that?" I took that as high praise from a student who has never asked me before for any extra work or practice, and I would love for more of my students to have the opportunity for such motivation.
Please help my students grow and develop as readers.
I strongly believe that reading is the most important skill one can have for success in school and in life. My students' futures will be changed forever if they can become proficient readers, and these workbooks will help them achieve that goal.
