Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are 5th graders, seniors of the school. However, their reading levels range from kindergarten to 3rd grade. In spite of their learning disabilities, they come to class daily with a positive attitude ready to learn.

My students are super heroes, ready to take on challenges, despite the odds stacked against them.

Our classroom library is composed of chapter books geared towards 4th-6th grade readers. Some do a good job of decoding, but have a difficult time comprehending the text. Majority of the students are hands on and visual learners, but our math manipulatives are very limited. These students have great potential and if given the right tools can soar academically.

My Project

On average the beginning of the school year is always a challenge for students and teachers, now with Covid 19 it's even more difficult. Starting off the year where students can jump into a nice book with their classmates and have their own copy will help make this transition a little easier. "Home of the Brave" by Katetherine Applegate is a great book to help students get a head start of the type of literature they will be reading in 5th grade.

To help follow safety guidelines, my students need their own books.

Giving students their own copy will ensure that they can learn at home and in school. In addition, students having their own copy will help with maintaining the safety protocol of not sharing materials.

To start off our Reading Workshop Unit with "Home of the Brave", students will learn to show empathy for others and walk in the characters shoes, which will help them as readers but also help set a positive tone within the classroom community.
