Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Counseling Upper Elementary and Middle School students is a challenge but it's the best challenge I've ever took on. My students are some of the best kids I've ever met. They're bright, brilliant and intelligent young boys and girls with an amazing future ahead of them. .

Self motivated, inspiring, determined and unique are just a few of the character traits they offer: they have that "push me down seven times and I'll get up eight times" mindset.

Growing up in the South Bronx, my students have fortunately and unfortunately lived vicariously through the lives of others in their surroundings. They continue to gain insight all while learning how to "survive in the hood" in order to "make it out of the hood" in the future. With this fearless mindset, they have become some of the most supportive and confident young people I've ever encountered.

My Project

I've had the privilege of being the School Counselor for my Middle School students for two great years. I've witnessed the most exciting to depressing stories from some of my students. My students grow up in environments where they might sometimes have to be the adult. At times, my students haven't had a safe place to call home. This generation is growing up in a society where they're being told continuously that they're not good enough because of their financial status, the clothes they wear, their race, culture, skin color, body shape, hair type, personal beliefs and more.

Many children including my students, they tend to internalize some of those emotions and more than often it leads to low self esteem, depression, self harm, suicidal ideations and/or even suicide.

My students will benefit from games such as “Better Me” and “Acting out: 60 Role Play Cards”. During individual and group counseling sessions, these games will allow students to gain various skills which they can use when they aren’t in their best emotional place. Books such as “I would but my Damn mind wouldn’t let me”, “The Skin You Live In” and “Feelings Journal” will also be used during session to identify triggers and emotions that often lead my students to develop a negative mindset. No child should have to physically hurt themselves because of bullying behaviors. No child should want to wish they were another person because of the color of their skin.

Help me obtain these books, resources, and games in order to assist my students in finding more effective ways to communicate through their internalized emotions. My students are ready to learn their core subjects but this task can often be difficult when they're carrying heavy hearts.
