Motivating Middle Schoolers

Help me give my students a love of reading by supplying my struggling readers with age-appropriate, high interest/low readability books. Middle school is awkward enough without being embarrassed about reading at an elementary grade level.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Middle school is awkward enough without being embarrassed about reading at a 2nd grade level. My 6th grade special education and ENL kids are passionate, creative, and inspire me to find new ways to motivate and challenge them!

I teach at a culturally diverse school where shared experiences are crucial to engagement!

My students come from low socioeconomic families and face difficulties at home, including language barriers. Many are latch-key kids who spend their after school hours going onto their devices rather than getting lost in a good book.

Yet in class, I see their love for literature. When reading a story aloud, I look up to see 30 faces hanging on every word I'm reading. They WANT to be readers, and have the potential, but need a lot of direction and the right books! I don't want the disabilities and the obstacles they face limiting their potential. I want to cultivate in them an autonomous love for reading!

My Project

Motivating reluctant readers is always a challenge! Especially for older students with learning disabilities that read way below grade level. Most of my students get distracted and easily frustrated, turning to video games or a device to keep them engaged.

The right books at the right level can make a world of difference to an older struggling reader!

The use of Literature Circles/Book Clubs helps to promote independent reading and an autonomous love of literature. But it can't be done without the right books!

Adolescents need high interest books about issues to which they can relate without feeling embarrassed about the content. High interest books will help them read with ease and confidence, keep them focused, and inspire them to continue reading independently--without the constant need for external motivation! Please help me instill a love of reading and open their eyes to the endless possibilities that books give!
