Help Mr. Bleakley

I am a 4th grade teacher in a suburban elementary school. I teach all subjects to regular and special education children. The cover of the September 2007 magazine "School Library Journal" reads "The Boy Problem- Many boys think school is stupid and reading stinks. Is there a remedy?" In the article it states that 9 out of 10 boys don't read in their spare time. This is completely unacceptable to me! There are many factors to why boys don't read that are beyond my control (e.g. video games). However, what I CAN do is put books into boys' hands that will make them WANT to read. There have been many graphic novels designed for younger kids that have come out in the last few years. For example, I have requested two Captain Raptor books, which are "action-packed science-fiction romps starring a cast of dinosaur characters". These books have plenty of pictures to elevate boys' interest in reading. I have also requested "Ooze Slingers from Outer Space," a well-reviewed book about an evil doctor that tries to take over a city with his awful Snot-Bots. Another book is "Billy Hooten: Owlboy", which is about a crime-fighting superhero of Monstrous City, an underground world populated by every type of monster imaginable. These and other books I have requested are to be sure hits with the boys (I also ordered a few books I know my girls will like). With your donation, you will be fostering a love for reading in my classroom. Help me fight the draw of video games with these great books. Thank you for considering my request.
