This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

If I had a quarter for every time I heard the phrase "This book is boring!”, I would probably have enough money for this proposal! Some of my students have been known to spend the entire twenty-minute period of independent reading time looking for an interesting book. The fact of the matter is my classroom library is extremely limited. It is hard to expect my students to become avid readers when they cannot find books that genuinely interest them. The problem of getting my kids motivated to read consumed my classroom until I was introduced to manga, the Japanese word for comics and print cartoons. My middle school students have a fascinating obsession with the world of Japanese art. After introducing just three of these books into my library, my classroom turned into a reading sanctuary. These graphic novels managed to engage even my most reluctant readers. By funding this project, you will contribute to expanding our classroom library and assist my Super Readers to fully engage in the reading experience. These novels are extremely helpful for struggling readers in my special education class because the story lines are accompanied by vivid illustrations that help students visualize the plot. In an urban school where illiteracy runs rampant, the importance of having an engaging classroom library is clear. My literacy classroom consists of 7th and 8th grade students from various cultural backgrounds in a high-needs section of NYC. The odds are stacked against them. My students battle alarming challenges ranging from low graduation rates, limited and insufficient resources, low academic expectations and neighborhood violence. As a special education teacher in an inner city school I am empowered to make a difference. I teach a self-contained class of 12 students as well as an inclusion class of 25 students. Your help will ensure that my students have the resources that they need and deserve in order to achieve at the high levels necessary for success. Donating to this project will enable my students to be fully engaged during independent reading time. Numerous studies have shown that reading independently significantly increases students’ reading levels. An important step towards becoming an engaged reader is having diverse and interesting reading materials in the classroom. Make our dream a reality. Motivate my Super Readers with manga!
