This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Help get my students become the best that they can be from their first year teacher. I have first and second grade students with a wide-range of disabilities and skills. As much as I would love to give them everything they need to thrive, I need some help.

I am a first year teacher with many materials left in my room for kids much more advanced. The previous teacher paid out of pocket for her materials so now I am scrambling each day to throw something together. Some of my students do not know what the difference is between a number or a letter, or even what the letters are in their name. Some also do have the drive to work or learn especially if it is a pencil and paper task. As a group, we are attempting to fix this problem by trying many different activities that make learning seem fun so that we can discover our hidden skills. The students can only do play-doh letters and numbers for so long before they go crazy!

My students have the knowledge, it is just getting it out of them in a way that is geared to their ability. If I had different hands-on materials than play-doh and dry-erase boards we could be doing many more activities. These resources include the tactile letters and numbers which could help my students that refuse to write with a pencil. My students with fine-motor needs could use their fingers to write their alphabet on color-changing board or use the letter building blocks to start making basic words.

If you choose to provide my students with materials, you are opening the door for them to catch up and feel as if they are capable to do as much as their peers. Providing them with these resources is providing them with a new way to learn.
