Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a teacher in a Title I elementary school in the Bronx in which 98% of our students are from low-income families. District 9 is known for its share of challenges (temporary housing, lack of resources, academic achievement gap, teacher turnover, etc.) but we do not use those challenges as excuses. We have 380 curious students from grades Prekindergarten to 5th grade. Despite the barriers they face outside of school, our students love to learn.
We believe in PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) as well as a strength-based approach and we will overcome obstacles together.
We focus on positive approaches and strategies as well as restorative practices. These approaches are not just geared towards the students but also to their families. We need your help to continue this wave of amazing progress.
My Project
Students and staff at our school believe in a Positive Behavior Approach. We catch students following our school wide PBIS expectations (We are respectful, we are responsible, we are caring and we are safe) and reward them using a token system. The students have the opportunity to exchange their points for incentives. Incentives include games, sports ball, whole class incentives, arts and crafts and other activities.
Writing materials were a huge hit in our PBIS prize bin.
Pencils, gel pens, mini notebooks, erasers, etc. were picked up my almost every student who shopped for a prize using our token system. This was so great to see because it showed us that our students want to engage in writing in their free time and want the materials to do so! We want to have a wide range of prizes for them to choose from and ones that will encourage academic growth as well as motivate them to meet the PBIS expectations!
