My co-teacher and I want to continue developing our learning environment into an amazing space that promotes literacy skills and creativity, writing, independence, and critical thinking! The markers, colored pencils, mesh bags, colored paper, labels, agents, etc. will help students complete projects and proudly display and organize their work. They will simultaneously learn important skills needed to become self-directed learners, making way for more project-based and creative assignments in my English Language Arts classroom! Other items such as labels, hanging file systems, and magnets will help them access the material. My students have a variety of learning needs and gaps resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and poverty in our community.
Often they come in asking for snacks or food. The snacks, erasable pens, and stamps will be part of our new system to help motivate and help students. I will be creating a reward system for our students to be able to choose items that they can have as a result of promoting an atmosphere of respect, unity, kindness, and also by having a growth mindset. Each student has a stamp sheet on colored paper that they earn stamps from the teacher to trade in for these items as they earn them. This way all students can get a tangible item for the good work and behaviors they demonstrate in class.
The other requested items such as the magnetic calendars and labels will be used to organize and beautify the classroom to create a space that promotes independence and responsibility.
