My Project
Hello, my name is Ms. J. and I am a Special Education educator at a Title-1 public high school located in Park Slope. In our school each teacher is assigned an advisory group that we call Circle. During Circle I demonstrate social emotional awareness and teach my students how to effectively express their wants, needs, and concerns, as well as resolving conflicts. Through Circle discussions and creative activities like this Mother's Day art project, I am able to bond and understand my students and their needs. I take pride in the fact that I am able to create a safe space for my students and they trust me enough to come to me when they need my support.
My Circle students support me just as much as I support them.
I lost my mom in May 2022 and it was a very difficult time for me. Most times if we are having a deep discussion and my mom comes up I get pretty emotional. My Circle students always show me kindness and compassion when I need it most. They have helped me heal so much. While going through my moms belongings I found a lot of the arts and crafts things and paintings I made for her in school, even some dating back to elementary school.
In 2024, I got the idea to do a Mother’s Day theme paint party. The project was a huge success! It was a pleasure to see my students so engaged and focused while creating masterpieces for their mothers’. It warmed my heart to see how much their mothers’ loved and appreciated their paintings and Mother’s Day cards. I would love to do the paint project again this year to honor this year's Circle’s mothers and mine.
