My Students

My classroom on a typical day is filled with middle school students creating beautiful art work. Students in my classroom will learn to be brave when creating art. "Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere." - Einstein

My school is an inner-city school with a high population of low-income students and families.

We are a school that prides itself in the athletic and academic abilities of our students. These middle school students come to school ready and eager-to-learn. Some of these students think they are not good at math. This project will help show students that math can be incorporated into other subject areas like art. This project will help my students be successful at both math and art.

My Project

My middle school students will be studying about mosaic art work and how they are created. These materials will help students be successful in both art and math. Students will use the glass cutters to cut pieces of glass into the shapes they need. Students will be incorporating mathematical patterns and principles when creating their projects. Students will study several different mosaic artists. Then students will design their own mosaic tile using cut up pieces of paper. Each project will have to incorporate a mathematical pattern or principle. After they have a complete rough draft they will use tools and tiles to create their artwork. Once their project is complete students will display their artwork for their classmates, teachers and parents to enjoy.

These materials will help provide authentic, creative and fun learning opportunities for my classroom.

Students will be able to create something with their hands that is usable and functional. The supplies being requested will be able to be reused year after year, creating a sustainable project for many years to come. Students who complete their mosaic tiles will feel a sense of accomplishment and hopefully discover a hidden talent.
