This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Since the pandemic three years ago, I have not been able to share the genius of Toni Morrison’s writing in one of her most recent works, God Help The Child. This novel has been well-received by the seniors who have read it before the pandemic shuttered schools. I am eager to share the beauty of this novel with my current seniors, however, the book is not available for purchase through the Department of Education.

The story of Bride, the protagonist of the novel, is compelling, refreshing, and representative of what many Black people face in this country, however, there is an emphasis on something else—Black, female beauty as it is continuously questioned and mocked because of colorism.

The issues revealed and discussed in the novel are ones my students are all too familiar with. They feel seen, the novel resonates with them, and they are left feeling inspired to continue the dialogue about beauty, trauma, and overcoming systemic racism, colorism, and breaking the vicious cycles that impact their lives.
