Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class serves students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual and learning disabilities, speech impairment, emotional disturbance, and autism spectrum disorder. They struggle processing information and teaching them using different modalities is extremely important to make sure I reach all of my students.

My students are first and second graders with both emotional and academic delays.

Most of my students are performing 1 to 2 grades below grade level, but are still expected to reach grade level common core standards as all other general education students. They are students that love learning but realize they are facing a challenge. Most of my students benefit from tactile and visual learning.

My Project

My students are in need of fun, hands-on activities to promote problem solving skills, critical thinking and encourage working together. These different building blocks will offer my students a great opportunity to explore, be creative and learn at the same time.

"Morning Exploration Bins" help create a smooth transition and independence when students arrive to school in the morning.

During this exploration time my students are working together in small groups. With this project my students will be using the magnetic tiles, creative brain flakes, wooden blocks, and straw builders to work together building task STEM activity cards or use their imagination and creativity to build something on their own. They would be using their imagination, creative thinking skills, and problem solving as they build different creations.

I believe it is important to give my students an opportunity to learn through play. Studies have shown that through play children learn to exercise problem solving skills, show an ability to think flexibly, practice processing their emotions, face their fears, and try new things without fear of mistake.
