My Students

What makes a girl great? Is it her ability to wear pretty, pretty bows in her hair? Can we teach young girls that they are worth far more than what you see on the outside? I want to inspire my girls to grow their minds and confidence through reading inspiring stories in a variety of genres!

We have twenty boys and girls in our fourth grade classroom with a range of ability levels.

Our elementary school is located in a small town in South Carolina. My students come from a variety of backgrounds, and each child has a different story. I have noticed that many of my girls are eager to start reading a book but struggle with the confidence to stay motivated to the finish. Since a lot of my students are reading below-grade level, I want to see them grow with excitement and confidence in reading that they can carry the rest of their lives. Some of my boys have thrived when they read inspiring biographies of sports heroes and war heroes! My classroom library is lacking stories about women as heroes. I want to teach my girls that they can have role models in a story just like the boys can. It is my goal and passion to keep my students excited about learning and leading!

My Project

I am requesting books, book sets, and novels in a variety of genres such as biography, realistic fiction, and historical fiction. These reading materials will help keep my girls confident in their reading. Each of these stories have themes that girls can be inspired and motivated by. I am requesting stories from multiple genres, both fiction and nonfiction, to encourage the students to read a wide variety of literature. My students will learn that reading can relate to their everyday lives, take them to new places, and inspire them to be leaders today and tomorrow! With a new-found confidence in reading, my students will increase their reading abilities, and we can begin to close the gap in their reading levels! I want each of my students to leave my classroom with a genuine LOVE for reading!

Your donation to our grant will help the girls in my classroom become more confident readers and leaders.

These stories will help bring so much excitement into my classroom library. This grant will help transform my students from reluctant readers to students who love reading and can be role models to others!
