This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach math and science in a special day class. The majority of my students are visual and kinesthetic learners. Exposure to hands-on-activities enhances their spatial awareness by allowing them to visualize objects and rotate, transform, and manipulate them. They are motivated students that desire to express themselves in discovery and inquiry. They enjoy seeing their engineered ideas come to life.

My students can be very creative; they are natural-born scientist waiting to explore the world around them.

When they come together for a new project or assignment, they collaborate and each take the engineer, leader, scientist, or mathematician role.

My Project

Students with learning disabilities often benefit from hands-on projects as opposed to learning information from textbooks, articles, copies of handouts, outlines of class lecture notes, or lengthy assignments. I teach science in a special day class where lessons and instructions need to be significantly modified for students who have disabilities.

Special education programs often lack the supplies and equipment necessary for science laboratory work.

Traditional microscopes require fine motor skills that challenge some of my students and are overall harder to maneuver. Digital microscopes are easier to use and provide more information on an on-screen interface for viewing objects. The slide can also be projected to a laptop for a larger image. Visually impaired students will be able to see a clearer image. Students will be able to capture images and make in-depth observations. This project will provide 3 scopes for my classroom.
