My Students

Every year, I work with an amazing group of students. They live in a high-poverty area and are all on free lunch. Most are learning English as their second language. They have many difficult challenges in their lives, but come to school every day eager, excited, and ready to learn!

"How do we teach reading - the reading that makes you feel as if you are breathing some new kind of air?

How do we teach the power of reading - the way it allows us to see under the words, between the words, beyond words? How do we teach the intimacy of reading?" (Lucy Calkins, 2015) Every year, I try harder to promote the love of books.

My Project

This will be my third year of working with Sulzy's research. I'm eager and excited to begin! I would love to have more Emergent Storybooks to add to our collection! This is what I wrote in anticipation of beginning my exploration of Sulzby: The first month of school I will plan and teach interactive read alouds with these Emergent Storybooks, or as I will call them with my students, the Star Books. I will also read these Emergent Storybooks as quick read alouds several times during the first month to continue to support emergent storybook reader goals (Sulzby Classification Scheme Instructional Profiles; Sulzby and Rockafellow, 2001).

These Emergent Storybooks create high engagement (which encourages participation), often have a repeated refrain (which develops memory of text), and have a high picture to text correlation (which assists readers in telling the story using the pictures and showing how stories work).

During the second month of school, these Star Books will be part of my students book bins on their tables. They will have time to "read" these books during reading workshop and will have opportunities to practice the deliberate and carefully chosen skill modeled in the mini-lesson. These daily experiences with high-interest and engaging texts will nurture my students' love of reading, in addition to developing an understanding of how stories and reading work. The experiences that my students will have with these Star Books are mimicking what many parents do every night with their children - read a book to their excited little one.
