My Students

My students are curious and interested in learning about science and the world around them. They love to do experiments and they love to ask questions, develop theories, and do research to find answers. We need safe, reliable equipment to make this happen.

All of my students are freshmen, just starting their high school careers.

Freshmen science class is a place where they learn the joy of working together to solve hard problems. Each year, I am delighted to watch them as they grow and become excited about science and their own skills and abilities. Over 70% of my students come from high-poverty households. My science class provides these students opportunities they may not have elsewhere, to do hands-on work with tools, chemicals, and other equipment to learn about the world around them.

My Project

We use hotplates throughout the year, for one or two experiments each month. Currently, we have a set of hotplates that are at least 25 years old. The elements on these hotplates are wearing out, causing some of them to not get warm enough. Other hotplates have fussy connections, requiring students to jiggle the plugs to get them to work. Wrong parts of the hotplates get hot, so that students must be careful not to burn themselves. This past year, a couple hotplates fell apart, which means I'm starting the year without a full classroom set (16 hotplates). Thanks to generosity from donors, I had my first grant request for two hotplates funded before school started! This is my second grant request, for two more hotplates to swap out with the old hotplates. It's going to take 8 grants to get a full set, but I'm confident we'll get there.

It will help me start replacing unsafe equipment. It will show my students that they are valuable and respected by providing them with good, reliable equipment.
