My Students

Children of today are fighting mass obesity rates. In order to help our children's health, we need to get them excited about exercise and nutrition! My students live in a high poverty area where school budgets have been cut drastically, which means that I have over-sized Physical Education classes.

My students are rambunctious preteens in an urban, poverty-stricken area of New York City.

They need physical activity not only for their overall health, but to alleviate their high energy levels. With the proper equipment, we can help motivate them to become lifelong learners of health and fitness.

My Project

At the end of last school year, during a class evaluation, my students agreed that they didn't get enough practice time during the basketball unit. As a result, they created multiple ball handling drills to increase their skills such as shooting, passing and even ones that promote team work and good sportsmanship.

My students researched various ways that would increase their level of skill so they could become better game players.

They became imaginative in creating drills that included increasing their cardiovascular endurance and eye hand coordination. They hope that this will progress into better passing and shooting during actual basketball games.

In order for my students to perform the drills that they have created, they need more basketballs, a cage to store them in and nets to shoot the balls into. Through their creative process, they have realized how much teamwork is important to the overall game!
