My Students

I teach in a PreK through sixth-grade school in rural Arkansas. We are a Title I school. We are 100% free lunch. The students are bright and inquisitive but many come from poor families. They have never been exposed to many cultural activities.

Many of our students have never been to a big city.

Most students have never seen a live concert, play or symphony orchestra.

I teach elementary music and I love to expose my students to all kinds of music and many different instruments. I want all of my students to experience more music!

This project will provide an additional Orff instrument for kindergarten, first grade, second grade, and third-grade students.

My Project

I am an Orff certified teacher. I teach in a Title I school in a rural area. We have several instruments that have been purchased over the last 10 years by a local educational foundation. But, we need a few more. I would like enough barred instruments and percussion instruments for all of my students to be able to play them during a class period.

Learning to play music with Orff instruments involves a sound before sight process.

Students begin by playing the instruments and then they learn to read music symbols as they play. They feel success right away!

Students will use this xylophone to help them learn to read music. Students will begin with exploration on the instruments. Then students will begin reading notation from the board and playing them on the instruments. The goal is for the students is to read and play written melodies on the instrument. They will also learn to improvise and create their own melodies on the xylophone.
