Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at my school aspire to creating a better future for their families, themselves, and the world. Through exploration of the media arts, students investigate and explore the important societal issues they know their generation is challenged to contend with. Ours is a Title I school, which means that the vast majority of our students are in low income situations.

I cannot help but admire my students, who through no fault of their own, are in "the system", either in foster care, or living in homeless shelters, and yet they show up to school every day, and even during remote learning, do everything they can to get their school work done.

I am also impressed by the capacity for empathy, and community that my students who are more fortunate are able to show to those who have it much tougher.

These kids deserve that bright future they are working so hard to achieve.

My Project

The school Mural Team is hard at work on their Black Lives Matter mural, and students are feeling empowered. They have asked me to see about getting some extra materials so that they may continue to create even more mural projects on our school building. They have been inspired to celebrate their shared cultural roots and the diversity of our city. Their ideas abound, and they want to use art to express pride, and the promise of a bright future. In the midst of these troubling times, my students remain filled with hope.
