Help Ms. Collins

I teach high school biology in an urban school. Our resources are very limited, including for laboratory activities. With a very tight budget we cannot afford to buy extra laboratory supplies.

My students love to do laboratory activities. I enjoy doing labs that connect with class to build another bridge and to get them more interested in the topic. The students are much more engaged with a hands' on experience in the lab than simply reading and taking notes in the classroom.

By adding more laboratory activities to my lessons, I believe my students will better learn the concepts in genetics. These labs will give them a first-hand experience of how genetics affect the outcome of an organism. With the mutated corn lab, my students will see the difference a gene can make with the different corn plants they grow. The tasting strips will show my students what simple genes can change, such as the ability to taste a specific item. I would like the reference posters as a visual aid to help them with the material, and aid in the laboratory, making it much more like a college laboratory. I try to prepare my students for the college atmosphere. Also, this year we added an environmental science class to our building. These materials can be used by these classes as they talk about how mutations affect the environment.
