Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have smartest, most creative transitional kindergarten students on the planet. They are all eager to learn and always ready for the next learning adventure. 3/4 of our student population is designated for free or reduced-price lunch and 1/4 our English Learners. Our community also has the largest population of foster children in Los Angeles County. Many grandparents on fixed incomes are taking the responsibility of raising their grandchildren.

Most families work outside the home as essential workers.

They are hardworking people trying their best to provide all their children need to be successful in school. Yet, supporting learning at home can be challenging for workingfor working parents. It is a difficult time for our families. Extra money to purchase educational supplies is not available for many families. Help me to help them make distance learning more accessible and realistically manageable. Young children need developmentally appropriate manipulatives and materials to support literacy and the development of mathematical reasoning.

The pandemic has strained school budgets. We teachers are struggling to provide for the basic educational needs of our students.

My Project

You are only a 4 year old once. This is precious time in the developmental of any child's fine motor and cognitive development. Unfortunately, we are asked to use technology that is not developmentally appropriate for the needs of my Transitional Kindergarten students This amounts to less learning and more frustration.

The Kindle Fires are light, easy to use devices with touchscreens that will make our online google meet accessible to their little fingers without the frustration of manuevering a mouse pad.

They can focus on the lesson, their teacher, and peers. Parents can focus on fostering their independence. A win-win. In addition, there are countless learning and drawing apps that can be used with stylus pen. This make pre-writing practice meaningful and fun, while strengthening their pincer grasp.
