Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How much water is stored in a puffy white cloud? 80,000 lbs of water is nearly impossible to conceive. Now, travel in the opposite direction: from macro to micro. How can young people perceive the cellular universe just at their fingertips, but still so far away from their immediate understanding?

Our high school is a college preparatory school serving a student population predominantly from surrounding low income neighborhoods.

Approximately 93% of the student population participates in the free or reduced lunch program, 54% of parents did not complete high school, and only 9% of parents graduated from college. This means that over half of our students will be first generation high school graduates; the percentage swelling to over 90% of our students as first generation college graduates. The graduation rate of our first class of seniors in 2008 was 97% compared to the district's rate of 66% (which is exceptional given the educational histories of our students and their families). Our school ranks 10 out of 10 compared to high schools with similar demographics and has earned an API score of 780. The majority of our population designated as low income and English language learners.

My Project

Students will compile a portfolio of illustrations and digital photographs that they have produced and captured during their microscope lab work. Then, they will select a photograph from their work and blow up the image for a 3’ x 4’ painting. Students will create these micro-to-macro paintings (800 billion times larger than the actual cell/cell part) that invite the community to experience science “in-their-faces”, to ask questions, and to participate in the students’ learning. Paintings will not be interpretive; they will be illustrated and painted as accurate representations of the digital images taken by students. The intention of this art work is not to abstract or obscure the experience of cell biology, but to challenge the audience and enhance their knowledge. Requested materials will help bring the concepts of cell biology "in-my-students' faces." 3D cell models serve as hands-on intermediaries between students and a cellular miniverse.

This project aims to enhance the scientific content knowledge of 10th grade students through a curriculum enriched with visual and kinesthetic modes of learning interweaving cell biology, technology, and art.

The ultimate goal of this project is to transform the young people from our community into life long learners (hopefully scientists and artists) who will understand, study, and have a deeper appreciation of the essential world of cells around them.
