My Project

As we continue to learn more about the freeze drying process and what we can and cannot freeze dry, we are needing more supplies. We need mylar bags that are air tight to prevent moisture from seeping in, and oxygen absorbers to be another defense against moisture once the products are freeze dried. We also need more parchment paper blanks to fit on the trays when we dry something. We have tried bananas, pineapples, apples and gummy bears so far. The gummy bears was the only casualty as it blew up and exploded in the freeze dryer!

Learning new technology to help preserve food for years in case of emergencies is a lifelong skill that everyone needs to know.

Freeze dried food can last for decades in the right conditions, and learning these concepts will give my students one more tool in their arsenal of life to help feed themselves and others in so many different ways. Even if we are not going the doomsday prepper route with our freeze dryer, it's been fun learning how things are freeze dried and tasting the finished products.
