My Project

Class book sets are expensive, which creates an unfortunate barrier between children and amazing, diverse stories.

Through this project children will be able to access unique perspectives, and explore different time periods of New York from that of a 1940s child recently immigrated from China, and a young Black girl in 1970s Brooklyn during the Bushwick fires.

Students will explore differing points of view, and be able to engage in conversations around class and race.

Literature provides an opportunity for children to see themselves in the pages, in the world, and in their every day lives. This is necessary to cultivate enthusiastic and critical readers. Not only will students look deeper into the stories, but also explore US geography, economics, social sciences, and engage in culturally relevant conversations that expand their abilities to engage in critical thought and conversation around racial justice.
