My Students

If we are going to prepare our children for the 21st-Century workforce we literally, and figuratively, need to get with the program. My students are a motivated group of fourth graders. They attend our community school in Southern California with a total population of about 750 kids.

Why do the classrooms look the same as they did 30 years ago?

It can be frustrating for teachers who want to equip their classrooms with the most current technology. Kids today have so many impressive and amazing tools available to them, but the funding just isn't there, from pencil sharpeners to laptop computers. We need to prepare children for their futures, which will be very different from the world today. A different world requires a different approach to education. That is what I strive to provide to my students.

My Project

Because of the Pandemic, students are stuck at home. Distance learning is proving to be a challenge for everyone involved; teachers, parents, and especially the students! For our kids, this kind of learning can feel very isolating. To bring them together, I would like to start a book club for the students. Think: Long-distance literature circles. My hope is that by allowing the students to choose from a list of titles, they can read books with their friends, meet in breakout rooms, and talk about what they have read. Then I can develop activities to go with each title.
