My Students

My Early Childhood through 2nd-grade students are diverse learners who come from a variety of backgrounds. We work together in small and whole groups to build the very language skills needed to be successful in school and beyond.

Students with language disorders struggle with vocabulary, grammar, following directions, answering questions, and sharing information.

This affects all areas of academics and even basic social functioning. My hope for my students is that when they leave me, they are able to successfully communicate with others in and outside of the school environment.

My Project

Each of my students struggles with communication in one way or another. Many of my youngest students have difficulty communicating even the most basic needs with appropriate vocabulary. I collaborate with the early childhood and cross-categorical classroom teachers on topic units to help increase a child's communication skills and boost age-appropriate vocabulary. One unit that we focus on during the school year is a farm and these materials can reach students for years and years to come.

By providing students with hands-on and literacy-based learning, we are providing students with exposure to language in a variety of ways.

By providing students with books, we are sharing a storybook experience, answering questions, building vocabulary, and engaging. Big books are exceptional for our whole group activities as some students have reduced vision acuity or visual processing deficits. By utilizing age-appropriate puzzles and toys, we are building skills in following directions, sharing information, and making verbal requests in a meaningful and play-based manner. Velcro dots allow me the opportunity to make more child-specific visuals for communication boards and whole group language activities.
