Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have secured a free field trip for my students to the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. The trouble is, we still have to provide our own transportation for the 105-mile journey to the aquarium and then back again. This field trip would be an amazing experience for my students, most of whom have never even been outside the city of Oakland. This aquarium is truly a memorable experience, with its outstanding exhibits and its discovery labs. If we are able to get our transportation taken care of, we'll be doing the "From Stingers to Spines" Discovery Lab that morning at the aquarium before moving on to explore the various exhibits. This lab is described as follows, "Structure and appendages are but a couple of the characteristics students will investigate as they determine how invertebrates are classified. By examining a variety of marine animals from different phyla, students will develop an appreciation for the diversity of invertebrate life." This fits directly into our 6th grade science standards, and I'm excited to already be planning classroom activities to do before and after our field trip to increase the value of the experience. We are asking each student to contribute some money to offset the cost of the trip, so the amount you see is not including the amount that students' families are giving. We'd really appreciate your help in raising a big chunk of this cost! Thanks for your consideration. 65 Oakland students and one very thankful teacher really appreciate it!
