Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My visual arts classroom consists of highly expressive and engaged artists, learning and having fun. My students, almost all are ESL learners, must master the understanding and use of the academic vocabulary. Ink Portrait Project, "The journey of 1000 miles, begins with a single step" Lao-Tzu

My students live in a low-income, predominantly Hispanic population.

Most of the students parents speak English as their second language as is true for many of the students. The school is a small high school within a larger high school campus and is making great strides improving test scores and improving students engagement and retention towards graduation. Art is a great way to make connections to students that struggle in school and may need to release stress. Others thrive given the chance to show their creative expressive side in this highly expressive and colorful culture in this community. The students are extremely talented in the visual and creative arts.

My Project

My Donors Choose classroom project idea is an Ink Portrait assignment for three Introduction to Drawing classes, serving over 100 students. This drawing project teaches students how to create realistic portraiture while simplifying the form into larger shapes of bold color. With the use of the grid method, the students enlarge and transfer their image onto the paper. This grid method allows the student artists to break the large portrait into smaller boxes, making the lengthy process manageable and helpful in obtaining accuracy. Students will apply their prior knowledge of Color Theory through the completion of the project and the specific colors they select, and they will apply their newly acquired academic language through writing about the artistic process.

In any inner city classroom, finding engaging student centered projects can be a struggle, where the distraction and the lure of the streets can sideline many young individuals in completing a high school education.

This portrait project has become my most engaging, student requested, and surprisingly difficult project. I have developed and refined this project over several years.
