This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend a pre-kindergarten through fifth grade elementary school in New York City. Our school is located in an area of the South Bronx with a very high concentration of poverty. Most, if not all, of my students are eligible for free lunch.

My students are a group of hard workers and so far many of them have made tremendous progress this year.

They often need constant encouragement, and tangible rewards to keep them motivated and on the right track.

My Project

An investment in knowledge pays the best dividends." ~ Benjamin Franklin. My students are a curious and energetic group of first graders who seem to become more focused and inspired after recess - a time of fun and physical exercise and activity.

My students will use the resources to promote media literacy and to create and maintain their very own data notebooks about what they read in their Scholastic News magazines.

Their data notebooks will not only be used to house their thoughts, and responses to what they have read, but also allow them to 'leave tracks in the snow' and reflect on what they have read. These 'tracks' will enable them to make their learning visible so they can SEE what they have mastered, still need to learn and any steps they need to take to achieve their reading, math and/or behavioral goals. My students will use the dry-erase sleeves and dry erase markers to mark up the text. My students will also use their data notebooks for 'talking points' when conferencing with teachers about new goals or when SHARING and SHOWING their parents what they have read and are learning, skills they have mastered, their learning goals and how they are preparing for success at the next level.

By having data notebooks, my students will be able to have tangible evidence that documents their learning. i am asking for thirty subscriptions to Scholastic News, eight packs of Round Ring View Binders, thirty two Write & Erase Durable Plastic Dividers, three boxes of Sheet Protectors, forty-eight

Post-it Super Sticky Notes, three boxes of Dry Erase Markers, two boxes of Pencils with Erasers and other supplies. The goal is to have my students become active participants in their own learning. With your help, my students will have the tools to do that.
