This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine not having access to a computer except for one hour per week. It would be hard to do everything you wanted to do in such a short amount of time. That is the challenge many of my students face. We have 3 PCs that would greatly increase our classroom research capabilities but we need monitors!

My students attend a wonderful visual/performing arts elementary school in California.

Most of my students are bussed in from diverse parts of the city. As most 6-7 year old, they are inquisitive and eager to learn about the world around them.

My Project

For many of my students, I am their first real introduction into computer technology. I begin the school year by taking apart a computer tower in front of them to show them the various parts (I used to work for Gateway Computers as technical support). We spend one hour every week at the computer lab working on learning the various software programs that will allow them to be a successful students in this new era of technology, such as word processors and search engines. Access to computers in the classroom has allowed my students to look up information that is pertinent to them without relying on me, which is wonderful and powerful because they begin to take charge of their own education! Unfortunately, the old CRT monitors I inherited have broken down and this year I face the prospect of not having any computers in my classroom for my students because we lack monitors.

Access to computers in my classroom is a necessity in this day and age.

We have the computers, all we need are the monitors to allow us to access them. Being competent with the technology of today will allow my students to be competitive in the job market of tomorrow.
