My Students

My school is a Title I school located in rural Kentucky. The students I serve are wonderful 5th graders, who work hard every day to achieve their academic goals. While we do our best to accommodate all of their needs, we face the devastating realization that 82.5% of our students come from households who live at or below the poverty line and a community that has a 17% unemployment rate. These facts and the unthinkable environments many of our students face on a daily basis make the roles of students and educator very difficult. However, even with the trials they may face, our students achieve among the highest in the state and have been given National recognition by receiving a Blue Ribbon award in 2014 and becoming a Kentucky School of Distinction.

My Project

I, currently, teach 5th grade Social Studies and integrate an economic based classroom behavioral system that mimics a mini version of our economy. Participation in this program means the students must pay rent for their desk, get paid a wage for their classroom jobs, receive bonuses for outstanding grades/extra credit, and may deduct fines for classroom infractions. Using these Chrome-books, the students would utilize Excel and other Google Chrome apps to create online "classroom bank" accounts to manage the money they earn in the classroom. The combination of the classroom economy, the Chrome-books, and Google Chrome apps would greatly contribute to the student's financial literacy by giving them the simulation of real world banking; therefore, the understanding of basis economic principals.

It is my hope this program will lead to other financial concepts such as long-term savings, taxes, and charitable contribution creating deeper financial understanding they will preserve to help them make informed financial decisions as adults.
